Terrier / Shih Tzu / Mixed (long coat) Dog

Riley (and Roxy) the Dog needs a home

Riley and his sibling, Roxy, have lived together in the same home their whole lives. Their owner is a single mom with teens who are heading off to college, and will no longer be able to help with their care. She describes Roxy and Riley as her kids’ dogs, and feels she does not have the proper time to care for them on her own.

Currently, our plan is to adopt them out as a pair, but once they are in our local foster home, we will reassess. Some siblings are bonded and do better together, and some actually do better separated. We want to get a better feel for these two cuties before we make that decision. They will be coming to N. VA on 2/17.

Our team first met Roxy & Riley at the vet, and they were terrified. They were not current on their vaccines, so it’s possible that going to the vet was a newer experience for them. They are up to date on everything now, and both are in good health. In the home, both pups are pretty social and do well when visitors drop by. They may bark at first when someone knocks, but once they see new people, they are all about getting love and attention.

Their owner says Roxy and Riley have fun together, and love to play-fight, and she describes them as having a moderate energy level. They currently get their exercise running around a fenced back yard, but don’t have a lot of practice walking on leash. Both dogs will sit on command, and Riley will lay down on command when you pretend shoot him with your invisible gun, saying “bang”. Roxy is the more confident and social of the two dogs, and her owner says it’s her life purpose to cuddle with you. Riley is hesitant at first, and a little more excitable and jumpy when you meet him.

Both dogs are excellent with kids and have lived with teens, and regularly spend time with the family nieces and nephews who are toddlers. They have not lived with other dogs, but are fine with other dogs once they’ve had a chance to get to know them.  Roxy is friendlier with other dogs than Riley. Often with siblings, one becomes the more dominant/social pup, and Roxy seems to be leader of the two.

More to come on this adorable duo as we get them settled into their local foster home.

You can also help save dogs like this one by becoming a foster, providing a rescue dog with a temporary home and giving them the love and care they need until they are permanently adopted. Every person who fosters is directly responsible for saving the life of a dog, because we can only save as many dogs as we have foster families available to welcome them into their homes.
